Steps for Creating ERP Implementation Training Strategy

Henry Mintzberg, a Canadian academic specializing in business management, once said, “Strategy is a pattern in a stream of decisions.” When it comes to making business decisions, having a strategy ensures that you’re not taking random actions – you’ve got a goal in mind and a plan will bring you closer to it.

When it comes to training your employees on how to use your ERP system, you need a strategy, too. Such a strategy leads to an effective training program that will provide your employees with the knowledge they need to use your ERP solution. Read on what steps you should take to develop such a strategy.

Step 1: Think about Your Audience and Your Learning Goals

The first step in creating a strategy is to think about who your audience is. Is it going to be a group of people with lots of technical knowledge, or do they have other strengths? Do you need to train everyone at the company, or just a few people?

Learning goals matter, too. Training should be reverse-engineered so that you know what the audience needs to learn from the outset, and you can design the training accordingly.

Step 2: Assess Your Capabilities to Deliver This Training

Before you start assembling the training materials and booking the room in which to hold the session, consider whether your firm has the in-house capabilities to deliver training. You not only need an ERP subject expert, you need someone who knows how to teach.

It’s entirely possible that you won’t be able to perform the training with your in-house resources. And there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s not a sign of weakness, and outsourcing ERP training shouldn’t be seen as a cost center (and therefore, something to be avoided). Your employees need to know how to use your ERP system; otherwise, you won’t get any ROI out of it.

Step 3: Determine the Training Schedule

When we talk about a training schedule, we’re not referring to selecting a day on which the training is available and you’ve got an empty room. Training is not a one-time exercise; scheduling it should be based upon your audience’s needs.

There’s the very real possibility that your employees might have unanswered questions after the training ends. And what happens when you bring on a new hire – you tell him or her, “Too bad, the training was just last week and you missed it”? You need to set a training schedule that addresses those unanswered questions and allows new hires to learn about the ERP system so they can do their job.

Everyone has heard the adage “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” It applies to training, too. Planning your training ensures that your employees will get the most out of it. In turn, that boosts your ROI on your ERP system. Take the time to plan how you’ll train your employees, and you’ll reap the benefits of that strategy.
